Subterrania Studios, Leeds is a place to record your high quality demo, MySpace songs, EP or album
Set up by myself, Mike Davis over four years ago, I wanted to open a studio where people could record the music they love but without paying high studio prices. I knew from experience that not everyone can afford to go to a big commercial studio so I wanted to keep Subterrania accessible to everyone. I provide a recording process which is tailored to each person's individual needs to achieve exactly the sound they want, on a budget that is right for them.
Subterrania Studios has a 3m x 2m acoustically treated live room and a fully equipped control room. It is designed specifically for vocalists, singer/song writers, musicians and small bands.

I can produce original tracks to your personal requirements and also have a large back catalogue of tracks available to buy.
I will work with you to produce your original track, EP or album. Which can then be recorded, mixed and mastered at Subterrania Studios if you wish.
My portfolio of work includes production, mixing and mastering for both independent and commercially released music. The basis of which has been within the hip hop, electronic, folk and reggae genres.

I had the pleasure of working alongside Mike on an exciting hip hop project with 'Instance' a couple of years ago. He was efficient, professional and best of all creative. It was clear as soon as I arrived to record that he is an experienced producer as he knew exactly what he needed to achieve for the artist and communicated this to me clearly. When unplanned musical moments, (for example a double vocal line) occurred during the recording he flexed his mixing muscles and incorporated the fresh ideas to improve the tracks overall. I've been waiting to make this album my whole rap career. I was just waiting to meet a producer who could do it justice. After meeting Mike [producer Mike D (Subterrania Studios)], I decided to do it.

The production (from Mike D probably one of the UKs most versatile and unrestrained producers) combines sparse electro drums with live piano and guitar licks and solos whereas elsewhere Rhodes organs, synths lean up against Dirty South-esque drum patterns.

"Literary Vices" though distinguishes itself on several levels. Firstly, production for the entire project is handled by Mike D. Hugely in demand around the Yorkshire area, Mike is not only capable of handling the sonic components of each beat he produces with exquisite precision, but also draws from a wider-than-usual range of influences. Where UK Hip-Hop producers often fetishise the dusty, loop-based style of early '90s New York, he takes these admittedly desirable elements and forcibly fuses them with the sleeker, more modern stylings of Dr Dre, Timbaland and the Dirty South. () his approach to production starts at the border between Grime and Dubstep and then heads off at pace into a world of its own.

I've had plenty of opportunity to see Mike at work over the last few years, both as a writer and critic working within the Leeds music scene and on those occasions when I've used his services at Subterrania Studios. I can honestly say that I consider Mike one of the most forward-thinking and versatile producers in the UK. His work shows great range - reaching stylistically way beyond his roots in underground Hip-Hop - and he has a real passion for what he does. From a professional point of view, he is always friendly and cooperative in arranging studio sessions and absolutely delivers on what is requested of him, be it simply recording parts for an existing track or building an entire piece from the ground up. I can also attest to his work ethic, which is very welcome in a genre within which some artists are less motivated than they might ideally be!
